Theory driven investigations
Most behavioral research and prevention action in the field of HIV generally are based on intentional models of health behavior to try to explain individuals' protective as well as risky sexual behaviors. In a set of investigations, conducted by IPSR and Utrecht University, we demonstrated, however, that the proportion of individuals who deliberately take risks is marginal, even in high risk populations such as gay men.
Most sexual risk-taking in contrast appears to be non-intentional and non-premeditated. Ambivalence towards risky behaviors, lack of safe sex planning, and the need to satisfy and cope with deep-rooted psychological needs were found to be important predictors of non-premeditated risk behavior. Innovative interventions were developed by IPSR on the basis of these results.
